After the older boys left the rocky bay, Jerry was determined to prove to himself that he would swim through the tunnel. He spent the next few days practicing to hold his breath as long as he could. He had gotten horrible nose bleeds but he kept on trying; he never gave up. On the last day of his vacation, he had made it all the way through the tunnel, counting his time spent under water, to help him with his breathing. Near the end, he almost ran out of breath, he kept on moving. One he made it out, achieving his goal; he learned that it was more important to prove something to you than to someone else. When he went through the tunnel, he was by himself and no one had watched him. He didn’t want to do it again just to prove to someone else that he could do it; he knew personally that he could. Going through a dangerous tunnel like that wasn’t worth proving to someone else that he could do it. In the story, â€Å"Brothers are the Same,† Temas accomplished his rite of passage surrounded by his tribe. Temas’ tribe has already determined his rite of passage when he reaches a certain age to prove his manhood, which is to defeat a lion. He tried to prove himself to everyone in the Masai tribe including the girl he likes, named Kileghen. Temas was scared of failure and scared of his friends laughing at him. When it comes time for Temas to fight the lion, he is circled by his tribe trying to prove his passage to manhood. At first, he couldn’t even get the lion’s attention; the lion had walked toward another member of his tribe Casaro. When Casaro was about to raised his shield to fight the beast, Medoto, a member of his tribe who also likes Kileghen, had flung a stone directly at the lion. Now the lion goes after Temas thinking he is the one who had thrown the rock. At that moment, all of his fear was gone. He had thrown his spear at the lion but had only hit the lion’s shoulder, which wasn’t enough to take it down. When the lion had bit Temas and Dragged him away, Temas still didn’t give up; he was determined to kill the lion. While the lion dragged Temas, He stabbed the lion and conquered the beast. His whole Tribe has a big celebration for his braveness and his success at becoming a man. Jerry had tried to achieve his goal to prove something to himself, while Temas had accomplished his goal to prove himself to his whole tribe. Jerry was happy for himself as Temas’ tribe was glad at Temas’ success. Jerry and Temas showed others that you can accomplish anything whether or not you’re proving it to yourself or others. Euro essays

Euro essays In the global economy, the U.S. dollar dominates the market. In order to balance the overwhelming control the U.S. has, a new union was created, the European Union. In 1946, Winston Churchill first envisioned a union of this magnitude. In January of 1992, its initial 12 members founded the European Union (EU). They were, in alphabetical order, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and United Kingdom (XE 1). In 1995, Austria, Finland, and Sweden join the EU (CQResearcher 1027). A few years later, it was decided the EU would adopt a common currency. This new currency would be called the Euro. Its main function would be to reduce swings in currency values to make it cheaper to trade both within Europe, and with surrounding nations. It would also help to balance the power that the US Dollar has over the global economy. It would also help to stabilize prices. It has other benefits within the participating parties, such as making prices fall by forcing companies to become competitive by fighting for the lowest price. It will also raise awareness of unfair pricing by not having to convert between currencies (CQResearcher 1027). Consumers and businesses alike will enjoy lower borrowing costs. It will also make it easier for tourists to travel between the member countries by not having to trade currencies, and just being able to keep one large sum of money. All of the members of the EU were invited to adopt the common currency, but there were standards that needed to be met before they were allowed to join. Applicants needed to reduce inflation, and budget deficits, while stabilizing their exchange and interest rates. The countries inflation must also not exceed the average inflation rates of the three best performing member states by 1.5%. United Kingdom, Denmark, and Sweden all chose not to accept the invitation, and Greece did n ...

Sample Common Application Essay Option 5 with Critique

Sample Common Application Essay Option 5 with Critique Jill writes about a person who had a significant influence on her. Her response works well for the 2018-19 Common Application essay option #5: Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. As you read the essay, note how it is about much more than the woman who influenced Jill. Jill uses her interactions with a strong-willed and difficult woman to reveal to the admissions folks an important moment in her own personal growth. Sample Common Application Essay Buck Up  by Jill Susan Lewis is a woman that very few people would consider a role model for anything. A fifty-something high-school dropout, she has little more to her name than a beat-up truck, a Jack Russell Terrier and a ragtag herd of aging and/or neurotic horses with which shes run a largely unsuccessful riding lesson program for twenty years with no business plan to speak of and little hope of ever turning a profit. She curses like a sailor, is perpetually un-punctual, and has an erratic and often terrifying temper. Ive taken weekly riding lessons with Sue since middle school, often against my own better judgment. Because for all her seemingly unredeemable qualities, she inspires me - not necessarily as a person Id strive to emulate, but simply for her unwavering perseverance. In the five years Ive known her, Ive never once seen her give up on anything. She would sooner go hungry (and sometimes does) than give up on her horses and her business. She sticks to her guns on every issue, from political views to hay prices to her (frankly terrible) business model. Sue has never once given up on herself or her horses or her business, and she never gives up on her students. My dad lost his job not long after I started high school, and horseback riding quickly became a luxury we couldnt afford. So I called Sue to tell her that I wouldnt be riding for a while, at least until my father was back on his feet. I hadnt expected an outpouring of sympathy (Sue, as you may have guessed, isnt an overwhelmingly sympathetic person), but I certainly wasnt expecting her to yell at me, either. Which was exactly what happened. She told me in no uncertain terms that I was ridiculous for thinking that money should stop me from doing something I loved, and she would see me bright and early Saturday morning regardless, and if she had to drive me to the barn herself that she would, and Id better be wearing a good pair of boots because Id be working off my lessons until further notice. Her refusal to give up on me said more than I could ever put into words. It would have been easy for her to just let me leave. But Sue was never a person to take the easy way out, and she showed me how to do the same. I worked harder in Sues barn that year than Id ever worked before, earning every minute of my riding time, and Id never felt more proud of myself. In her own stubborn way, Sue had shared with me an invaluable lesson in perseverance. She may not be much of a role model in any other respect, but Susan Lewis does not give up, and I strive every day to live by her example. Analysis and Critique of Jill's Common Application Essay What can you learn from how this essay was written? The essay is interesting and written in an engaging style, but how well does this work for the purpose of the Common Application essay? The Essays Title The title is the first thing a reader sees. A  good title  can immediately pique your readers curiosity and grab his or her attention. The title frames and focuses the words that follow. A missing title is a lost opportunity, and a weak title is an immediate handicap. Unfortunately, coming up with a good title can be  remarkably  difficult. Jills title Buck Up is good in that it plays with the word buck. On the one hand, the essay is about horses. On the other, it is using the phrase buck up to mean showing some courage or backbone. This kind of playfulness can work well in a title. Buck Up, however, does have some shortcomings. Namely, it isnt entirely clear to the reader what the essay will be about. The admissions folks may end up appreciating the title, but only after they read the essay. A title that makes sense only in retrospect obviously isnt doing the best job preparing the reader for the essay. The Essays Focus By focusing on Susan Lewis, someone who in many ways isnt even likable, the essay isnt typical, and it shows that the author can recognize the positive in a person who has a lot of negatives going for her. The college admission reader will be impressed that the author has shown she is a creative and open-minded thinker. The essay fully explains the influence Susan Lewis has on the author, leading her to appreciate hard work and perseverance. This was an important step into adulthood for the author. Also, think about the broader implications of the essay. If a teenager is able to recognize the positive qualities of someone as unlikable as Susan Lewis, that student is also likely to do well in a residential college where different personalities are thrown together in close quarters. The Essays Tone Striking the right tone can be a big challenge in a college application essay. When writing about someone who is rather unlikable, it would be easy to come across as mocking or condescending. The essay points out many of Susan Lewiss shortcomings, but it keeps a light an playful tone. The result is that the author comes across as loving and appreciative, not deprecating. However, it takes a skillful writer to provide just the right balance of levity and seriousness. This is a danger zone, and you will need to ensure you dont fall into a negative tone. The Quality of the Writing Buck Up is not a perfect essay, but the flaws are few. Try to avoid clichà © or tired phrases such as sticks to her guns and back on his feet. There are also a few minor grammatical mistakes. Jill does well when it comes to the essays style. The narrative has a pleasing variety of sentence types ranging from short and punchy to long and complex. The language is playful and engaging, and Jill has done an admirable job painting a rich portrait of Susan Lewis in a few short paragraphs. Every sentence and paragraph  adds important details to the essay, and the reader never gets the sense that Jill is wasting space with a bunch of unnecessary fluff. This is important: with the 650-word limit on Common Application essays, theres no room for wasted words. At 478 words, Jill is safely within the length limit. The most admirable thing about the writing here is that Jills personality comes through. We get a sense of her humor, her power of observation, and her generosity of spirit. A lot of applicants feel like they need to brag about their accomplishments in their application essay, yet Jill shows how those accomplishments can be conveyed in a pleasingly understated way. Why Colleges Ask Applicants to Write Essays Its always important to keep in mind why colleges ask applicants to write essays. On a simple level, they want to make sure you can write well, something that Jill has demonstrated effectively with Buck Up. But more significantly, the admissions folks are indicating that they have holistic admissions and they want to get to know the students they are considering for admission. Test scores and grades dont tell a college what type of person you are, other than one who works hard and tests well. Whats your personality like? What do you truly care about? How do you communicate your ideas to others? And the big one: Are you the type of person we want to invite to become part of our campus community? The personal essay (along with the  interview  and  letters or recommendation) is one of the few pieces of the application that helps the admissions folks get to know the person behind the grades and test scores. Jills essay, whether deliberately or not, answers these questions in ways that work in her favor. She shows that she is observant, caring, and funny. She demonstrates self-awareness as she narrates the ways in which she has grown as a person. She shows that she is generous and finds positive qualities in people who have a lot of negatives. And she reveals that she gets pleasure out of overcoming challenges and working hard to achieve her goals. In short, she comes across as the type of person who would enrich a campus community.

Analyzing an image and text - - Assignment Example The painting was able to capture the different emotions of the narrow street through the expressions of the people in the scene. The colors of the picture and the strokes that had been used by the painter also contributed to the message of vibrant activities of the people in the narrow street. But the said painting was given a deeper meaning by the poem. Every part of the picture was given meaning, the child and the ball, the baker, the couple, the child and the mother, and the other elements of the picture. Though the written words, the meaning of the picture was elevated to the point that the audience can perceive that the narrow street is bursting with emotions of excitement, love, etc., which is more than a painting can ever express. The two works elevated the normal activities of the people in the narrow street and gave it more life, color and importance. Although the painting was able to capture the emotions that gave the audience a better and more exciting perspective, the written words was able to create a higher level of understanding. On a personal note, the written words can give a higher perspective because it can lead to the limitless imagination of the audience or the reader. Although the painting can elicit an emotion, the picture that it creates is more exact and leaves less space for the mind to explore. It can make the mind think of meanings behind the painting but the imagery it can stimulate is limited to the scenarios in the

Factors Affecting the Oral Communication Assessment in ESL Students Essay

Factors Affecting the Oral Communication Assessment in ESL Students - Essay Example However, there are several issues that are thrown against the ways in which the English language are taught. Perhaps one of the most significant issue that concerns the study of the English language among these students are the ways in which oral communication is taught as distinct from the written communication. Moreover, these two major forms of communication have significant uses in which they are utilized appropriately. The oral communication which involves the speaking ability of the person is utilized most of the time as he or she is required to speak upon personal interaction with various people. One is expected to exhibit proficiency in the oral communication such that it is one of the most common forms of interaction. The inability to showcase good speaking skills creates an impression of incompetence. On the other hand, the written form of communication is yet another major form, however, not as often used as the oral form. Mostly utilized in academic and creative aspects of communication, it is considered that the written form of communication is the ones that focus more on the technical aspect of the English language because there is enough room to evaluate the language's technical aspects such as grammar and sentence construction. Oral commThe Oral Communication and its Proficiency Test Oral communication is observed to be the most and the widely used form of communication, thus lies the need to help student in this area is considered to be greater than in the written form. In one's daily undertakings, he communicates more orally then in the written form. Therefore, the use of the English language in oral communication must be given as much attention that is necessary especially among English as a second language (ESL) learners. Being able to communicate proficiently in using the English language had become a measure of an ESL student's communicative competence. As the dominant form of communication in one's daily interaction, oral communication - in the form of conversation - a person is able to demonstrate his skill and ability to participate actively and appropriately in group discussions. This communication skill is what second language learners would need to achieve, not alone for competitiveness in the job market, but for self-confidence as well. (Kormos, 1999) Competency in participating actively and appropriately in a group discussion encourages various rooms for improving ones oral communication skills. When a second language learner is able to take part in a group discussion, he is provided with an overwhelming opportunity to show his skills in a conversation. According to Kormos (1999), conversational competence is illustrated in oral communication into the various situations. If a person is able to "perform openings, re-openings, closings and pre-closings, establish and change topics, hold and yield the floor, backchannel, interrupt and to collaborate, as well as recognize and produce adjacency pair," therefore he has mastered the art of conversation. When a second language learner is able to perform these factors that are deemed important in a conversation, he is then able to exhibit competency in oral communication. (Kormos, 1999) On the other hand, Annie Brown (2003) made a contrasting

Oregon Trail :: essays research papers fc

CROSSING THE Great Plains The Oregon Trail was an overland emigrant route in the United States from the Missouri River to the Columbia River country, was the way to travel back in the 1840’s through the 1860’s. In 1843 the "Great Emigration" began and the west would never be the same after the out set of the travelers. The pioneers by wagon train did not, however, follow any single narrow route. In open country the different trains might spread out over a large area, only to converge again for river crossings, mountain passes. In time many alternate routes also developed. They originated at various places on the Missouri, although Independence were favorite starting points, the routes taken along with the wagon trails are the key points in which made it possible to travel west. Those starting from Independence followed the same route as the Santa Fe Trail for some 40 miles, then traveled to the Platte and generally followed that river to the North Platte and t hen the South Platte. Crossing the South Platte, the main trail followed the North Platte to Fort Laramie, then to the present Casper, Wyo. and through the mountains by the South Pass to the Colorado River. The travelers then went to Fort Bridger, from which the Mormon Trail continued to the Great Salt Lake, while the Oregon Trail went northwest across a divide to Fort Hall, on the Snake River. The California Trail branched off to the southwest, but the Oregon Trail continued to Fort Boise. From that point the travelers had to make the hard climb over the Blue Mountains. Once those were crossed, paths diverged somewhat; many went to Fort Walla Walla before proceeding down the south bank of the Columbia River, traversing the Columbia's gorge where it passes through the Cascade Mountains to the Willamette Valley, where the early settlement centered. The end of the trail shifted as settlement spread. The mountain men were chiefly responsible for making the route known, and Thomas Fitzp atrick and James Bridger were renowned as guides. The first genuine emigrant train was that led by John Bidwell in 1841, half of which went to California, the rest proceeding from Fort Hall to Oregon. The first train of emigrants to reach Oregon was that led by Elijah White in 1842. In 1843 occurred the "Great Emigration" of more than 900 persons and more than 1,000 head of stock.

In Your Opinion What Is/Are The Main Theme(s) Of The Book?

Have you ever thought about death? Are you ready to die? If your answer is no, you can change it by reading Tuesday With Morrie . This book is filled with perfect aphorisms and life lessons that can change someone’s life. Tuesday classes with Morrie changed Mitch Albom’s life and thought him how to live. The issues that they talked about are big lessons for everyone. Personally, I have learned a great deal from the book and in this essay, I explain some important themes which, in my opinion, are offered in rejection of what culture is holds to be true, give love and let it come in, and do not think money is everything. First theme is rejecting what culture is saying. do not believe what people around you telling what is right or wrong. Try to develop your own culture by finding people whom you can trust . Every society has its own problems; therefore, you need to be strong and listen to your heart , do your work , and do not give up on things that you do not believe in . For example, in the book Morrie’s opinion is â€Å"we are teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn’t work, don’t buy it† (page 35). This quote means that if you listen to media, news, and your friends and do what they ARE saying, you will end up with an unhappy life. Likewise, Morrie, who loses his independence, is still accepted in society, because he has unique way for living, he has his own culture. He started project called Greenhouse, where poor people could receive mental health services. He visited by colleagues, kept in touch with his students, and wrote letter to his distant friends. All of this is signs of a fact that he was successful in developing his own culture. To sum up, do not waste your time to believe culture and do not lose your confidence. Believe yourself and trust your belief to have a happy life. The second theme is the fact that love can never die. If you have someone to love you, you will never disappear from his or her minds. Love between you and your family will take care of you at any time, even though you got terminal disease, like Morrie, and there is no hope for you to live. â€Å"The fact is there is no foundation, no secure ground, upon which people may stand today if it isn’t the family. (page91) For instance, in Morris’s opinion â€Å"love is A rational act† (page 134). It means if you give love, it will return to you. He quoted from W. H. Auden the thing that love is the essence of every person, and every relationship without it is nothing. We can see that the importance of love in Morrie’s life is clear for him because when he is going close to death without care of his family, he would pe rish. In conclusion, love brings happiness and meaning to life. Lastly, do not think money is everything. People who just work for money are always busy. They do not pay attention to people around them, they are alone, and everything is money for them. They think money gives them power, and it can sustain them at any time even when they face with death. However, Morrie knows better since when one encounters death, neither money nor power will give one the feeling that they are looking for. People, who think more money is better, do so because they did not find meaning in their lives, so to find out the meaning in their lives, they just run for new houses, new cars, and property. They seek meaning in appearance. The truth is, you don’t get satisfaction from those things. Only offering what you have to give, gives you satisfaction. †(page126) For example, if you have skill in computer, you can teach to the old people. They will be very grateful. This is how you start to get respect by offering your time and your talent. Lastly, money cannot give you everything you need; on the contrary, it can make you lonelier. In conclusi on, I really enjoyed the book and I have learned from it. It thought me that culture is not always right and most of people do not know this fact. They rather be brainwashed in their lives. Second theme is love people around you, enjoy your moment with them, and find someone to give your love uniquely. Have children to experience one of the most important feelings in life; a sense Of fullness and felicity which cannot be expressed in words. Additionally, the last thing is money. It is not something for which you would be supposed to work and spend all your time on. Instead, pay more attention to people around you, and put more essence of human being in your lifetime. Finally, I am seeing this book as a life reference, filled with perfect quotes and stories. I really recommend it to people to read and learn from it.
